Who Am I?
I have recently received my Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and now here I am working on my Master of Arts degree in Reading Education through Appalachian State University.
I am a lover of books, poetry, and especially children's literature. I cannot wait to dive into the world of teaching through the use of different and inclusive children's books. I hope this blog will aid with my endeavors as an upcoming elementary classroom teacher.

I have aspirations of working with children of all abilities as well as someday publishing my own works in children's literature and poetry. With this blog I am learning about the important aspects and values among children's literature.

I am expanding my values and practices this semester by improving myself as not only a children's reading teacher, but as my students' writing peer -- their community member in the area of writing.

I am taking big leaps and bounds this year working on something very exciting and absolutely out of my comfort zone!! Keep an eye out in some of my blog posts for a couple of previews into my works.

My Name Story
How I Ended Up as Sarah Joy Scrattish
Originally, my mother thought I would be born a boy with whom she wanted to name Joseph. In my recent years, I have often wondered why she didn't just change the name over to Josephine to fit with what she wanted... but I guess it just wasn't meant to be (I also think my name is much more fitting, given the context).

The name Sarah in the Hebrew language, quite literally, means "princess." My family has always given me this as a nickname and I very much lived up to the title -- in action and in dress. As I have grown, I have started to notice the humility, honor, and care that also must accompany someone with such a name.

My middle name is Joy. This was given to me because during my mother's pregnancy my father would often call me his, "little bundle of joy." The word stuck around so much so that it became my middle name.

My last name is Scrattish. This is one that is unique, as I have not found or heard of another Scrattish in the United States that is not somehow related to me in some way. This name has an origin in eastern European countries like the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Croatia. I actually have had a chance to visit the country of Croatia and it was an incredible experience.
